Rail and bus
Churchill is the leading cleaning provider in the rail, underground and bus sectors. Our rail clients include Nexus, Network Rail High Speed, Eurostar, GTR, Southeastern, Grand Central Rail, Merseyrail and British Pullman.
We provide multi-faceted cleaning operations:
Fleet
- Our teams clean trains and buses during service and outside of operating periods. Inside of operating times (in transit) our operatives empty litter bins, restock washrooms and clean up spills.
- When vehicles require turnaround cleaning, our crews work through them to ensure they are clean and safe for the next group of passengers.
- When vehicles are berthed and out of service, we use the latest reach and wash technology and jet washing to clean them externally. When specialist cleans like graffiti removal are needed with have the right skills and equipment to get the trains looking their best again. Our operatives are also trained to handle chemical effluent and water tanking tasks, so that onboard washrooms function efficiently.

- When pit facilities are available, we also clean the under-frames of locomotives and carriages. When incidents occur on the railway network, our teams are on hand.
- For the interiors, we provide deep and heavy cleaning to help remove upholstery stains and attend to issues like ground in chewing gum.

The built environment
Our cleaning operatives clean bus and train stations (underground and over ground), including platforms, washrooms and windows. Services are delivered day and night for all stations by a combination of static and mobile cleaning operatives.
Our mobile teams also clean way points like bus shelters away from the main stations. Clean bus stops help passengers feel more comfortable using buses and they are often the only infrastructure seen by customers on their journeys.

Strathclyde Partnership for Transport (SPT) – case study
Formed in 2006, Strathclyde Partnership for Transport (SPT) is the largest of Scotland’s seven regional transport partnerships. It operates the Glasgow Subway as well as specialist bus services and is responsible for delivering better public transport for all. The Glasgow Subway carries 13 million passengers each year with 35,000 passengers using the Subway every day.

DeliVR
As transport is one of our most significant cleaning sectors, it was the perfect space to showcase the benefits that could be realised by investing in our newest form of training.
Instead of relying on operatives reading manuals, we introduced virtual reality training. We simulated our train cleaning operations, specifically ‘rolling stock’ when a train is in a turnaround clean. Scenarios involve collecting rubbish, re-stocking washrooms and cleaning spillages when a train is at the end of its route.
The VR programme gives operatives an insight into what a day on the job looks like by allowing them to virtually walk through the train carriages, spotting rubbish and spillages, and restocking consumables. This gives a feel for the on-the-job tasks that the industry cannot replicate in typical training settings. Users get scores and feedback immediately after a session which can be logged and discussed with their supervisors.
We call our training programme DeliVR and its innovative use of the latest virtual reality hardware and software has won us an IWFM Impact Award and seen us shortlisted for an i-FM Technology Award.
